What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of an individual’s cognitive, academic, social-emotional, and behavioural functioning. Administered by a registered psychologist, it includes interviews, standardized testing, observations, and a review of developmental and educational history. This process helps identify both strengths and areas where additional support may be needed — offering a clear understanding of how a person learns, processes information, and interacts with the world.
What Does an Assessment Measure?
Cognitive & Intellectual Abilities
How a person thinks, reasons, and processes information — including memory, verbal/non-verbal reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
Learning & Academic Skills
Performance in core academic areas such as reading, writing, and math. Helps identify learning strengths and possible learning disabilities.
Social-Emotional Functioning
Emotional regulation, interpersonal skills, and self-awareness. Assesses contributing factors to stress, anxiety, or mood changes.
Behavioural Functioning
Patterns of attention, mood, self-regulation, and behaviour — both at home and in learning or work environments.
Executive Functioning
Skills such as planning, organization, time management, working memory, and impulse control — often key areas of difficulty for individuals with ADHD.
Who May Benefit from a Psychoeducational Assessment
Struggles academically or professionally despite effort
Missed key developmental milestones
Difficulty focusing, paying attention, or completing tasks
Ongoing feedback from teachers, employers, or caregivers about behavioural or learning challenges
Avoidance, frustration, or anxiety around school or work-related tasks
Emotional outbursts, mood changes, or low motivation
Poor time management or chronic procrastination
Recommendation from a teacher, doctor, employer, or counsellor (note: no referral is required)
Why Get a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment can help determine whether learning, attention, or emotional challenges are connected to a specific diagnosis — such as ADHD or a learning disorder. This understanding can lead to:
Access to specialized supports and accommodations
Development of Individualized Program Plans (IPPs), Learner Support Plans (LSPs), or workplace accommodations
Increased self-confidence in learning and work environments
Improved collaboration between families, educators, and professionals
Long-term planning for academic, occupational, or post-secondary success
